Botox Injections - the Facts

Botulinum therapy (abbreviated to B.tox) has become the latest thing in Sydney society in fact it is becoming a beauty routine necessity for some individuals in the Harbour City. Yet I am always astounded by the amount of half truths which surround this painless procedure.

Here I have included a selection of the misunderstandings which I come across everyday in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a physician.

Mistake no. 1: B.tox can freeze all my expressions!

Underneath the skin of the face are about sixty muscles. Their excessive use over a period of time may result in fine line formation. Too great a dose of Botulinum Toxin may lead to the muscles of the forehead looking too relaxed. The quantity injected by most physicians result in you looking refreshed, nevertheless you will keep your natural expression.

By injecting a carefully measured amount of the preparation in precisely the right muscles facial expression is saved whilst any lines undergo a softening effect.

Mistake no. 2: Botulinum is a poison!
Actually there is a grain of truth in this assertion. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact pharmaceutical nomenclature. Too great a dose can relax muscles that you do not want relaxed and even can make you extremely ill.

Pharmacists have a well-known phrase that states ‘everything is poisonous - it all depends on the dose’. All drugs can make a person unwell in large quantities. Even water can kill you if enough is taken.

Mistake no. 3: It will hurt!
The hypodermic needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter smaller than your hair. Many people state that the injections are not as sore as a bug bite. Certainly not as painful as having a regular shot.

Mistake no. 4: B.tox will deaden the sensation in my face!
Not true. Botulinum medicine works principally on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not sensate nerves. B.tox only targets the relaxation of muscular tissues.

Mistake no. 5. You have to keep having B.tox otherwise you will develop worse wrinkles than earlier!
Again this is simply wrong.

One treatment will last approximately 3 months. Consequent treatments tend to last a little longer. Eventually as muscle strength returns to normal - the lines will eventually reappear. However they will certainly be no deeper than before.

Even should you do not have B.tox again - those lines will probably be a little better than if you had never been treated. This, of course is primarily because your facial muscles and skin have had a rest for a few months.
