IiNet Placed on Spam Blacklist Due to Customer Server

Perth ISP iiNET had a couple of its email servers placed on a large spam blacklist for the second time this week. This is due to a gaffe by a junior employee of the company.
Spamhaus, one of the world’s largest spam blacklists designed to track notorious spam operations blacklisted an IP address range that iiNet uses last week. According to iiNet operations center manager Richard Staniforth, the problem was found to be on a customer’s dedicated linux server. The said server was located on the same IP address range as the company’s email servers.
The dedicated server in questioned was later removed in order to prevent more difficulties for those who use iiNet mail.
The problem seemed to have been resolved, says Stanforth, but it has resurfaced when a call center operator derailed the process by accident after it sent Spamhaus a blank delisting email.
Basically, Spamhaus received a blank email that said ‘please remove’ (us from the blacklist), he explained. And so the blacklist team thought that the company isn’t doing anything about the issue so they decided to list them again.
News of the said blacklisting became a hot topic on the broadband forum Whirlpool. This started when clients began calling up the ISP about their emails not being delivered properly.
The other email service providers have been blocking the entry of the emails due to the information that Spamhaus has provided them. Spamhaus offers a free list of the email service providers that it taps into the block spam.
